In Boeren op de buitenplaats wordt deze onbekende agrarische geschiedenis van de Hollandse buitenplaats voor het eerst tot in detail gereconstrueerd en verklaard.
Voor dit boek onderzocht Gerrit van Oosterom ruim honderdzestig buitenplaatsen uit het Amstelland, hun eigenaren, pachtboeren en landbezit. Naast de economische aspecten besteedt hij veel aandacht aan de manier waarop die boerderijen ruimtelijk werden ingepast op de buitenplaats. In zijn veel omvattende onderzoek beschrijft hij ook de sociale verhouding tussen boeren en pachtheren, de rol van vee binnen de buitenplaatscultuur en de ideologie achter deze unieke combinatie van nut en genoegen.
Gerrit van Oosterom is landschapsarchitect en landschapshistoricus. Hij is gefascineerd door fenomenen die zich in de marge van de buitenplaatscultuur manifesteren en onderzoekt buitenplaatslandschappen op regionale schaal.

Buisman is the Director of Wetsus – European Center for Sustainable Water Technology, and Professor at Wageningen University, in the Netherlands.
