De ziel van zwart Amerika

The Souls of Black Folk, hier vertaald als De ziel van zwart Amerika, staat aan de basis van de zwarte vrijheidsstrijd in de twintigste eeuw. De literaire begaafde W.E.B. Du Bois beschrijft hoe raciale vooroordelen doorwerken in het alledaagse leven van zwarte mensen. Anders dan witte mensen, worden zij gedwongen tot een ‘dubbel bewustzijn’, waarbij ze zichzelf ook steeds door de ogen van de witte mens zien.
Met dit boek gaf Du Bois de aanzet tot een hernieuwd zwart zelfbewustzijn. Zo voedde hij de latere strijd voor toegang tot het hoger onderwijs. Inmiddels geldt het boek, waarin het ideaal van het panafrikanisme centraal staat, als een mijlpaal in de Afro-Amerikaanse literatuur.
De inleiding is van de hand van Stephan Sanders. Babah Tarawally laat in het nawoord zien dat Du Bois’ meesterwerk weinig aan actualiteit heeft ingeboet.
William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868–1963) promoveerde in de filosofie. Als vooraanstaand Amerikaanse mensenrechtenactivist richtte hij de National Association for the Advancement of Colored People op. Dit is, opmerkelijk genoeg, de eerste vertaling van zijn meesterwerk.
Humanity is not a plague

Large-scale technologies could even increase our problems. It seems that the growth of humanity will depend on the growth of our consciousness.
Cees Buisman studied water purification engineering, in addition to business administration, communication theory and applied integral psychology. Throughout his life he has worked on new environmental technologies, which are used in industry all over the world. His scientific work is highly cited. Buisman is the Director of Wetsus – European Center for Sustainable Water Technology, and Professor at Wageningen University, in the Netherlands.
