Bernard Mandeville

In dit vlot geschreven boek rekent hij af met het verzengende moralisme van zijn tijd en legt hij de basis voor een nieuwe economische theorie. Niet de deugd maar de ondeugd, het eigenbelang, zet mensen aan tot actie, schrijft hij. In deze eerste grote biografie over Mandeville leren we hem kennen als een veelzijdig en scherp denker met een gouden pen. Openhartig vertelt hij over zaken als seksualiteit en psychische ziekten. Ook zijn pleidooi voor vrouwenemancipatie is vernieuwend. Denkers als David Hume, Adam Smith en Charles Darwin schreven dat ze schatplichtig waren aan deze grote Rotterdammer.
Renatus Willemsen studeerde economische geschiedenis, bedrijfskunde en filantropie. Hij werkte als directeur beleggingen bij verschillende financiële instellingen.
