Bernard Mandeville
€ 29,90Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733) is vooral bekend van zijn Fabel van de bijen. In dit vlot geschreven boek rekent hij af met het verzengende moralisme van zijn tijd en legt hij de basis voor een nieuwe economische theorie. Niet de deugd maar de ondeugd, het eigenbelang, zet mensen aan tot actie, schrijft hij. In deze eerste grote biografie over Mandeville leren we hem kennen als een veelzijdig en scherp denker met een gouden pen. Openhartig vertelt hij over zaken als seksualiteit en psychische ziekten. Ook zijn pleidooi voor vrouwenemancipatie is vernieuwend. Denkers als David Hume, Adam Smith en Charles Darwin schreven dat ze schatplichtig waren aan deze grote Rotterdammer.
Renatus Willemsen studeerde economische geschiedenis, bedrijfskunde en filantropie. Hij werkte als directeur beleggingen bij verschillende financiële instellingen.
De Wonsstelling
€ 24,90Met veel te weinig manschappen, militair materieel en slechts met geïmproviseerde versterkingen verdedigde het Nederlandse leger in mei 1940 de Friese Wonsstelling tegen de Duitse aanval. Dit met unieke foto’s en kaarten geïllustreerde boek geeft een uitputtend verslag van de voorbereidingen en de gevechtshandelingen, gebaseerd op nooit eerder gepubliceerde verslagen en persoonlijke aantekeningen van militairen en burgers. De strijd, die aan Nederlandse zijde 18 doden kostte, werd altijd terloops beschreven als voorspel van de aanval op Kornwerderzand. Voor het eerst krijgen de militairen die in de Wonsstelling hebben gediend een waardig eerbetoon in dit naslagwerk.
Adjudant b.d. Jacob Topper (75) is plaatsvervangend conservator van het Kazemattenmuseum Kornwerderzand en werkt al ruim dertig jaar als vrijwilliger voor dit museum.
Humanity is not a plague

Cees Buisman studied water purification engineering, in addition to business administration, communication theory and applied integral psychology. Throughout his life he has worked on new environmental technologies, which are used in industry all over the world. His scientific work is highly cited. Buisman is the Director of Wetsus – European Center for Sustainable Water Technology, and Professor at Wageningen University, in the Netherlands.
