    De crash van de Amerikaanse bommenwerper Seattle Sleeper opzondagmorgen 26 november 1944 bij het Friese Haulerwijk staat diep in het lokale geheugen gegrift. Er zijn nog steeds ouderen die hierover kunnen vertellen. Latere generaties hebben zich via overlevering een beeld gevormd van de crash en de lotgevallen van de betrokken vliegers.
    In de loop van de tijd is dit beeld echtervervaagd. Voor Jan Slofstra en Jaap de Boer aanleiding om de geschiedenisvan de Seattle Sleeper opnieuw te bestuderen aan de hand van nieuwegegevens afkomstig uit archieven, publicaties en interviews. Dit leidde tot de gedetailleerde reconstructie van de gebeurtenissen die is weergegeven in dit boek.
    Wat het boek bijzonder maakt is de plaatsing van het onderwerp in de brede context van de luchtoorlog en de oorlogsgeschiedenis is van het Fries-Gronings-Drentse grensgebied.

    Bij het volgen van het spoor van de vliegers van de Seattle Sleeper raakten de auteurs onder de indruk van de moed die veel gewone mannen en vrouwen hebben getoond bij de hulp aan geallieerdevliegers. Aan hen en hun nagedachtenis dragen zij dit boek op.
