    Het baanbrekende werk van Johann Hermann Knoop, ‘tuinman’ van Maria Louise van Hessen Kassel (stammoeder van ons vorstenhuis), werd oorspronkelijk in 1758 uitgebracht. Met zijn beschrijvingen en illustraties van de ‘beste appel- en peervariëteiten die in Nederland, Frankrijk, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en andere landen met uitsterven bedreigd waren en daarom gekweekt werden’ mag Knoop met recht de grondlegger van de pomologie worden genoemd, de tak van plantkunde die gespecialiseerd is in de studie van fruitsoorten.
    Van Roomse Griet tot Paradijsappel, van syden hemdje tot Doeke Martena. Ze staan allemaal in dit boek. Net als al die perensoorten: van Engelse koningin tot sonder sieltjes.
