1672 vielen meerdere landen de Republiek binnen, zodat ook Van Kingma aan meerdere fronten actief was. Bij Muiden vocht hij tegen het leger van de Franse koning Lodewijk XIV en in Friesland stond hij tegenover de Duitse oorlogsbisschop Bommen Berend.
In deze biografie reconstrueert Joost Kingma het leven en de oorlogshandelingen van de kolonel. Zijn boek voert langs het leven van de Friese landadel, naar de net opgerichte universiteit van Utrecht tot aan de slagvelden van een van de beroemdste oorlogen uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis.Joost Kingma (1950) schreef onder meer de succesvolle boeken De magie van het jaren ’30 huis en Tussen ideaal en kapitaal, de historie van Bouwfonds tussen 1946 en 2006. Hij is planoloog en publicist en was onder meer lid van de directie van Bouwfonds. Het levensverhaal van Ignatius van Kingma is gebaseerd op langjarig onderzoek naar zijn familiewortels.
