« Als God bestond, zou men hem moeten afschaffen,» schrijft de Russische filosoof Michail Bakoenin in zijn essay ‘God en de Staat’. Bakoenin pleit voor een samenleving zonder God, zonder meester, zonder dictator, zonder wetenschappelijke genootschappen die ons van alles voorschrijven, zelfs zonder staat. Michail Bakoenin (1814–1876) was een Russische anarchistische filosoof. Tegenover het communistische ideaal van een sterke staat plaatste hij het idee van federale gemeenschappen met zelfbestuur. In 1848 was hij betrokken bij de opstanden in Parijs en Praag.
De leugens en de schaterlach
€ 17,90Toen de Russische componist Dmitri Sjostakovitsj in 1975 overleed, werd hij wereldwijd gezien als een trouwe, zij het wat weerbarstige vazal van het Sovjetregime. Maar klopte dat wel? Was hij niet eerder een geheime dissident? Een enorme controverse kwam op gang. Dit essay reconstrueert de pittigste debatten uit die Sjostakovitsj-strijd: een spetterend gevecht van leugens en (halve) waarheden, dat de muziekwetenschap meer kwaad dan goed heeft gedaan. Daarna komt de componist zelf aan het woord. Tussen alle meesterwerken door schreef hij namelijk ook een snoeiharde Stalin-satire: de Antiformalistische Rajok of De Peepshow. Vol humor rekent hij daarin genadeloos af met de cultuurpolitiek van de sovjets.
