Soldaat van Napoleon (1806-1815)
€ 24,95500.000 soldaten trekken in 1812 in het leger van Napoleon naar Rusland. Van hen zullen honderdduizenden nooit meer thuis komen. Joseph Abbeel overleeft de verschrikkingen van de veldtocht wel. Hij lijdt honger en dorst, plundert om aan eten te komen, ontsnapt ternauwernood aan kozakken, zit onder het ongedierte, raakt gewond in een veldslag, ziet Moskou branden – en dan moet de terugtocht nog beginnen! De dood is nooit ver weg – en soms verlangt Abbeel er zelfs naar! – maar op miraculeuze wijze ontglipt hij telkens dat lot. Wanneer hij op de terugweg Hamburg bereikt en denkt dat zijn ellende bijna voorbij is, wordt hij krijgsgevangen genomen. Dan begint een tocht naar de Wolga, nog achthonderd kilometer verder dan Moskou.
Na thuiskomst in Vlaanderen zet Abbeel zijn herinneringen op papier. Hij doet dat beeldend, met humor en oog voor detail, zodat de lezer zijn avonturen letterlijk meebeleeft. Geen andere soldaat van Napoleon schrijft zo’n belangwekkend ooggetuigenverslag van de Russische veldtocht.
Dr. Joost Welten is onderzoeker aan het instituut voor Geschiedenis van de Universiteit Leiden. Zijn dissertatie over de invoering van de dienstplicht onder Napoleon werd bekroond door de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen.

Victor Horta and the Frison House in Brussels

Horta designed not only the house, but also all its furniture and decoration, right down to the smallest detail: from door handles to marble fireplaces, from mosaic floors to elegant banisters, from wall lamps to the gratings for the cellar openings. The absolute eyecatcher is the winter garden, whose elegant design allows soft yellow light to flow subtly into its perfectly proportioned space.Nupur Tron is the author of this book and owner of the house. In recent years, she has breathed new life back into Horta’s masterpiece. She pieced together bits of the old chandeliers she found in one of the cellars. She had items of furniture designed by Horta lovingly restored. With great passion, she continues to search for the funds that will allow her to restore the entire house to its former glory, one step at a time.
