    an ambassador for the NGO ‘Light for the World’ and a consultant in medical legal matters.

    Marijke Meu (1688-1765)

    Marijke Meu (tante Marijke) is de koosnaam van Maria Louise van Hessen-Kassel (1688-1765) waaronder de Friezen hun vorstin uit de achttiende eeuw kennen. Zoiets zegt veel over de aard van de band die de Friezen met deze prinses uit het huis van Oranje-Nassau hadden. Veel minder bekend is haar voortdurende strijd om de belangen te verdedigen van haar enige zoon: de latere stadhouder Willem IV. Het voortbestaan van het huis Oranje-Nassau, waarvan de Hollandse tak met het overlijden van stadhouder Willem III in 1702 uitgestorven was, leek door de dood van Johan Willem Friso in 1711 onzeker.
    ‘Marijke Meu’, Friso’s weduwe, vormde geruime tijd de dunne draad die Willem van Oranje met ons tegenwoordige koningshuis verbond. Lang heeft de officiële Nederlandse geschiedschrijving zowel aan haar als aan haar tijd weinig aandacht besteed. Met deze biografie worden leemten in onze kennis van de achttiende-eeuwse stadhouderlijke familie aangevuld.
