Robert L. Harris werd in 1987 aangesteld als gids op Skellig Michael, County Kerry, waar hij meer dan dertig jaar het team van gidsen leidde en het eiland observeerde. Hij heeft het grootste deel van zijn leven aan zee of op eilanden gewoond en heeft een grote belangstelling voor het kloosterleven en de natuur. Hij verblijft van mei tot en met oktober op Skellig Michael, als het eiland toegankelijk is, en tijdens de wintermaanden woont hij met zijn vrouw Maigread in County Leitrim.
