Van Brooklyn naar boerenland

In een mozaïek van licht tegendraadse verhalen vertelt Marc van Aart over het mooie, het lelijke en het soms wonderlijke leven in Italië na zijn verhuizing van Brooklyn-New York naar Monte Castello di Vibio, een dorpje in Umbrië. Het contrast kan haast niet groter zijn: van de chaos van de grote stad naar het lome leven tussen de olijfbomen op het platteland. Om zo snel mogelijk in te burgeren leert Van der Aart de taal, doorloopt hij de eindeloze bureaucratische procedures, sluit vriendschappen met zijn buren en wordt lid van de lokale duivenvereniging. Hij schrijft over zijn ervaringen, observaties en overpeinzingen, van de jaarlijkse olijvenpluk en het gebruik van de percolator tot de afunctionele schoonheid van Italiaanse auto’s en de illegale prostitutie langs de weg. Of zoals de Umbriërs het zelf zo treffend zeggen: ‘Tiriamo avanti! We slepen ons voort!’
Marc van der Aart (1964) richtte bedrijven op in Haarlem en New York, introduceerde de fietsen van Van Moof in de Verenigde Staten en presenteerde tal van culturele programma’s en podcasts. Sinds vijf jaar woont hij met zijn vrouw, twee katten, een hond en een paar kippen aan de rivier de Tiber. Samen runnen ze een Bed and Breakfast.
Mevrouw Sapiens

Een internationaal team van meer dan dertig wetenschappers twijfelt er ernstig aan. Uit allerlei vondsten blijkt dat mevrouw sapiens, de prehistorische vrouw, veel machtiger en krachtiger was dan lang is gedacht.
Thomas Cirotteau is auteur en regisseur. Hij maakte de documentaire Lady Sapiens en de internationaal bekroonde film Qui a tué Néandertal?
Dr. Jennifer Kerner is docent prehistorie aan de Université Paris-Nanterre. Ze is tevens verbonden aan het CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) en aan verschillende musea.
Eric Pincas is historicus en journalist. Hij is hoofdredacteur van Historia.
Victor Horta and the Frison House in Brussels

commissioned by Maurice Frison, a lawyer and friend of the architect, and was built in 1894-1895. Horta designed not only the house, but also all its furniture and decoration, right down to the smallest detail: from door handles to marble fireplaces, from mosaic floors to elegant banisters, from wall lamps to the gratings for the cellar openings. The absolute eyecatcher is the winter garden, whose elegant design allows soft yellow light to flow subtly into its perfectly proportioned space.Nupur Tron is the author of this book and owner of the house. In recent years, she has breathed new life back into Horta’s masterpiece. She pieced together bits of the old chandeliers she found in one of the cellars. She had items of furniture designed by Horta lovingly restored. With great passion, she continues to search for the funds that will allow her to restore the entire house to its former glory, one step at a time.
Horta and the Frison House in Brussels is an ode to the architect and his creation.
Nupur Tron is from India. She studied Design, Marketing & Merchandising and Fine Arts at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She designs jewellery, in which the different styles of east and west meet in harmony.
