Brugge voor Napoleon
€ 29,90Op 5 mei 1821 sterft Napoleon op Sint-Helena, een godvergeten eiland in de Atlantische Oceaan. Na zijn nederlaag in Waterloo (1815) meenden de geallieerden dat de ‘kleine korporaal’ langzaam vergeten zou raken. Napoleon verloor wel zijn laatste veldslag, maar zijn invloed is nog tot op vandaag merkbaar.
De Franse keizer deed ook Brugge aan, toen een ingeslapen provincie-stadje. Hij kwam er twee keer op bezoek, namelijk als populaire consul in 1803 en als absolutistisch keizer in 1810.
Gedurende ruim twintig jaar voelde Brugge – en tal van andere steden in Europa – de hete adem van de Franse bezetter in de nek. Die bezetter eiste drastische hervormingen, vaak tegen de wil van het volk, de kerk en de staat. Stadsarchivaris Jan Anseeuw, en de auteurs Henk Anseeuw en Bert Gevaert brachten verschillende Brugse specialisten samen voor een omvattend naslagwerk over de Franse tijd in Brugge.
Ze volgen het spoor van gewone soldaten, excellente kunstenaars en veteranen, maar ook van criminelen, deserteurs en doodarme mensen.

Victor Horta and the Frison House in Brussels

commissioned by Maurice Frison, a lawyer and friend of the architect, and was built in 1894-1895. Horta designed not only the house, but also all its furniture and decoration, right down to the smallest detail: from door handles to marble fireplaces, from mosaic floors to elegant banisters, from wall lamps to the gratings for the cellar openings. The absolute eyecatcher is the winter garden, whose elegant design allows soft yellow light to flow subtly into its perfectly proportioned space.Nupur Tron is the author of this book and owner of the house. In recent years, she has breathed new life back into Horta’s masterpiece. She pieced together bits of the old chandeliers she found in one of the cellars. She had items of furniture designed by Horta lovingly restored. With great passion, she continues to search for the funds that will allow her to restore the entire house to its former glory, one step at a time.
