€ 39,95Het was zo’n mooie gedachte: paradijsvogels zweven zonder vleugels in de lucht dichtbij God. Ze hebben geen poten, omdat zij pas na hun dood op aarde neervallen. De vogel laaft zich aan de dauw of drinkt rechtstreeks uit een wolk en voedt zich met manna. De zeelui van Ferdinand Magellaan (1480-1521), die als eerste de wereld rond zeilden, bazuinden dit verhaal rond. Zo kwamen de vogels aan hun naam. De paradijsvogels vergaarden in korte tijd grote roem omdat ze er prachtig uitzagen en slechts een handvol ontdekkingsreizigers ze ook in het echt hadden gezien. Ook vandaag kunnen we ons vergapen aan de pracht en praal van deze fladderende kleurboekjes dankzij uitgever en auteur Richard Bowdler Sharpe (1847-1909). Hij realiseerde met A Monograph of the Paradiseidae or Birds of Paradise in twee volumes een meesterwerk: de tekeningen zijn van uitzonderlijke kwaliteit, de inkleuring – door zijn tien dochters – is ronduit subliem.
De verklarende inleidingen door Alexander Reeuwijk, auteur van boeken en artikelen over natuurhistorie en reizen, over wetenschapsgeschiedenis, cultuur en oude boeken in het algemeen; en Steven Van Impe, curator van de erfgoedbibliotheek Hendrik Conscience in Antwerpen, accentueren het belang van en geven de nodige achtergrond bij de publicatie van dit boek.
