Vogels in de cultuur gaat over onze vogels in een brede cultuurhistorische context: het staat vol met historische verhalen uit het volksgeloof, oude wetenschap, aangevuld met volkse gebruiken en citaten. De auteur beschrijft uitgebreid per soort of soortgroep onderwerpen als volksgeloof, bijgeloof, volksweerkunde, volksgeneeskunde, magie, mythes, jacht, naamgeving, sprookjes en legenden.
Gedurende tientallen jaren heeft de auteur materiaal verzameld afkomstig uit middeleeuwse encyclopedieën, boeken over volksgeloof en oude documenten. Daarbij heeft hij een groot aantal toepasselijke prenten gevonden, afkomstig uit de zestiende tot en met de negentiende eeuw.
Johan Boussauw (1953) is grafisch kunstenaar, met grote belangstelling voor middeleeuwse prenten. Dit boek is het resultaat van de combinatie van een voorliefde voor oude boeken, een uitgebreide natuurkennis en zijn belangstelling voor volkskunde.
