Teken je een ideaal landschap, dan kom je waarschijnlijk uit op het Zuid-Limburgse landschap tussen Epen en de Belgische grens. Een heuvelland met verspreid liggende bossen en buurtschappen, doorsneden door beken die uitmonden in de rivier de Geul. Toen natuurvorser Eli Heimans (1861-1914) er begin vorige eeuw voor het eerst kwam, raakte hij betoverd door de schoonheid van het glooiende landschap en de plantengroei, en vooral door het oude gesteente dat er aan de oppervlakte kwam. In 1911 verscheen Heimans’ boek Uit ons Krijtland, een onovertroffen voorbeeld van een natuurhistorische streekbeschrijving.
De auteurs Wim Huijser en Jeroen Bosch wandelen met een aantal deskundigen en betrokkenen – waaronder boswachters en boeren – in het voetspoor van Heimans en laten zien hoe uniek dit Nationaal Landschap nog altijd is. Tegelijk tonen de gesprekken die zij voeren aan dat het agrarisch grondgebruik en het toenemende toerisme sluipenderwijs een bedreiging vormen voor het landschap en de biodiversiteit. Maar ook verkennen zij de perspectieven om dit arcadisch stukje Krijtland
voor komende generaties te behouden
