MINIATURE WORLD – THE POWER AND BEAUTY OF LICHENS

This book is an introduction to the world of lichens. Lichens are true record breakers of life. They survive the vacuum of space and make their own sunscreen; in many ways, they are biological curiosities. And although they live on every paving stone, branch and roof tile, science
still does not know exactly what a lichen is. There are hundreds of species, each with a unique appearance and way of life. Some form spectacular micro-skylines, while others can be used as an indication of air quality.Henk-Jan van der Kolk and Harold Timans are biologists with a special interest in lichens. Ron

THE CONQUEST OF AMERICA
Through the eyes of its Natives

We are familiar with only one side of American history: that of the European colonizer. This book describes the other side. We explore American history—specifically that of North America—through the eyes of Indigenous peoples. The conquest of North America began in 1492, marking the onset of colonization. Indigenous populations were deliberately infected with deadly diseases, displaced, marginalized, and partially assimilated. Indigenous peoples and cultures survived near-annihilation, yet the effects of this colonization remain palpable to this day.

Tahir Vladi (1978) studied American Studies at the University of Groningen and specializes in the history of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas.

Gerben van Geest, Fons Smolders and Jan Roelofs
AQUATIC PLANTS AND WATER QUALITY

Ensuring good water quality requires in-depth knowledge of the processes that control this quality and how aquatic plants respond to them. Water Plants and Water Quality provides a thorough and up-to-date overview of the knowledge on this subject. This knowledge has been successfully applied many times in recent decades in the ecological restoration of water bodies.
The book covers the following aspects:
• The basic principles of biogeochemical and physicochemical processes that are important for water systems.
• The importance of various controlling factors for aquatic plants, such as inorganic carbon, nutrients and salinity.
• A description of stressors that affect water quality. These include eutrophication, acidification, salinisation and climate change.
• The landscape perspective: how does the landscape function naturally and how is it affected by human activity? Understanding this is essential for choosing the right restoration measures.

The editors Gerben van Geest, Fons Smolders and Jan Roelofs are affiliated with Radboud
University Nijmegen, the B-WARE Research Centre and Van Geest Ecology.

LOOKING DIFFERENTLY – ON PARTNERSHIP WITH NATURE

The natural world is under pressure, raising existential questions. Nature philosopher Matthijs Schouten sees that our relationship with nature is changing rapidly and profoundly. In Looking Differently he inspires us to look at the world with an open mind and offers a thoughtful and hopeful perspective on the future for both humans and nature. We are not as powerless as we often think, he emphasises.
Matthijs Schouten is an ecologist, philosopher and Buddhist. Until recently, he was ‘in-house philosopher’ at Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission) and professor at Wageningen University; he is also involved with the NatuurCollege (Nature College).

‘The greatest revolution in our relationship with nature does not take place outside us, but within us. In this book, Matthijs Schouten does not tell us what we must do, but holds up a mirror that encourages us to think, experience and act from a place of hope and love.’
– Jessica den Outer, director of the Rights of Nature Foundation

WORKING IN A NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

About sabre-toothed cats, water fleas, urban giants, and a stone marten on my luggage rack

Natural history museums have captured the imagination of young and old for generations, with examples of taxidermy from faraway places, unique fossils from times gone by, and surprising stories about nature in your own country. However, the exhibitions are only a small part of the story. The author takes the reader on a tour behind the scenes; how do you take care of 400.000 dead species and how does a collection grow and much more.

Bram Langeveld (1993) is a biologist and curator at Natural History Museum Rotterdam. As a child, he was already fascinated by nature and an avid collector of fossils. He has published several books on nature and fossils.

Jantien de Boer
WONDERBIRDS – WHAT BIRDS ARE TELLING US

Can birds talk? Do they perhaps even consult with each other about the choices they make? Biology has so far assumed that only humans have spoken language, but something is happening. Much more often than expected, biologists catch a glimpse of a moving, rich,
intimate world for which scientific language is still lacking and which they hardly dare to talk about because they don’t want to be dismissed as sentimental.
Wonderbirds explores that world at the intersection of science and the unimaginable. Do spoonbills really tell each other about the most ideal migration route? Do godwits really use different words for harriers and buzzards? Can a swallow ask humans for help? In insightful
conversations with scientists, author Jantien de Boer explores that exciting interface.

‘Beautiful. I read it in one breath and with tears in my eyes. Nowhere is the complex truth distorted, yet it reads wonderfully. Th at doesn’t happen often.’ – Theunis Piersma, Professor of migratory bird ecology, University of Groningen

Hay Wijnhoven & Alexander Reeuwijk
THE PIGEONS OF TEMMINCK AND KNIP

In 1811, a monumental monograph of all pigeon species known until then was published: Histoire Naturelle des Pigeons et des Gallinaces, by the famous Dutch zoologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck and the talented French artist Pauline Knip de Courcelles. The publication contained scientific descriptions of the order of pigeons and of the individual species as well as life-size illustrations, which were particularly striking for their colour brilliance.
This milestone in the history of bird books is now republished for the first time, with informative introductions by Hay Wijnhoven on pigeons and text by Alexander Reeuwijk on the creation of the monograph itself. But above all, with all 86 images of the birds.

ART

Hendrik Callewier
THE VANITY OF THE CANON – JORIS VAN DER PAELE AND JAN VAN EYCK

Joris van der Paele is perhaps the most famous Canon in (art) history. In 1436, he was immortalised by Jan van Eyck in a masterful painting. Joris van der Paele was not as devout as Jan van Eyck would have us believe. As a young man, he left his native city of Bruges to enter the service of the Pope. Not out of vocation, but out of unbridled ambition and a hunger for success. He witnessed one of the greatest crises of the Church: the Western Schism, in which two and later three popes fought for the Holy See. He returned fabulously wealthy, first to Utrecht and later to Bruges, where he lived off his income. There he decided to spend his money on a painting and on masses for his soul, so that he might live on in eternity. Historian Hendrik Callewier reconstructs the biography of a canon and a painting against the backdrop of the late medieval Netherlands and Europe. Hendrik Callewier has a PhD in history, is head of the state archives in Bruges and Kortrijk and teaches at KU Leuven.

THE TANGIBLE WORLD OF JOHANNES VERMEER – HOUSEHOLD ITEMS AS MODELS FOR PAINTERS

The renowned Delft painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) depicted a wide variety of household items in his paintings: from a simple wicker bread basket to a precious Indo-Portuguese jewellery box made of teak and ebony. Never before have surviving examples of seventeenth-century household objects, as depicted in Vermeer’s work, been brought together in a single publication. Accurate identification of both functional and decorative household objects, such as cooking and kitchen utensils, serving and drinking vessels (glassware, cutlery), furniture (chairs, tables), and specific objects depicted by Vermeer, such as a copper chandelier, silver inkwell, coin weight box, toiletries, jewellery and oriental carpets, offers a surprising perspective on the genesis of his oeuvre.

Alexandra van Dongen (Leiden 1961) is curator of historical design at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. In 2022, she published her book Closer to Vincent. Everyday objects in the work of Vincent van Gogh, for which she won the Mr. J.W. Frederiksprijs in 2024.
Her research is part of a long-term project called ALMA: Art Linked to Material Artefacts at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.

In this book, Arjen Dijkstra tells a delightful new story about Eisinga’s life and the creation of the Franeker Planetarium. He draws upon dozens of previously unknown sources to put together a remarkable picture of the Builder of Heavens, placing Eisinga in the context of major economic, political and scientific change. MOUSE TEETH AND BUTTRESSES – BUILDING IN THE MIDDLE AGES

How do you make a brick? And what do you need to make glass? Who decides what a building looks like? And can you just build anything you want? Even in the Middle Ages, people wanted a roof over their heads. But you couldn’t just pop to the DIY store or order roof tiles online. Yet even then, people were building churches and monasteries, town halls and market halls, and countless houses. And many of them are still
standing today!
To discover how they did it, this fascinating book, aimed at children from 8 years and up, takes us on a journey through forests and mountains, rivers and construction sites. What kind of materials did medieval people need? And who helped them?
In Mouse Teeth and Buttresses young readers and everybody interested in architecture and engineering will learn all about the often breakneck feats that medieval people had to perform to build their churches, castles, towers and houses.

M/F/X – GENDER DIVERSITY IS OF ALL AGES

What do Joan of Arc, le Chevalier d’Éon, Julia Pastrana and Pharaoh Akhenaten have in common? One wore trousers as a woman, another wore a skirt as a man, the third was a woman with a beard, and the famous Egyptian was depicted with breasts! In M/F/X, dozens of
men, women and sometimes also ‘man-women’ or ‘woman-men’ are discussed, each of whom questioned the traditional binary narrative in their own way. Th ey were often mocked, hated, viewed with pity or stared at with fascination. Apart from the questions they repeatedly raise
about the binary narrative, the M/F/X in this book have something else in common. They are all fascinating personalities that come to life through the use of authentic sources and often previously unpublished images.

Bert Gevaert is a teacher of classical languages, a historian of mentalities and a city and museum guide in Bruges. Johan Mattelaer is a urologist with a keen interest in the history of medicine and sexuality. This is their second book.

GEORG WILHELM STELLER – BETWEEN KAMTSJATKA AND ALASKA

Georg Wilhelm Steller belongs in the same league as natural history researchers such as Darwin, von Humboldt and Wallace. He was the first biologist to reach Alaska in 1741 during the Second Kamchatka Expedition led by Bering. On the return journey, the expedition ran aground on an uninhabited island. During his stay there, Steller described the flora and fauna he encountered on the island. Eventually, the surviving sailors reached Kamchatka. Before Steller could return to St. Petersburg, he died in wintry Siberia, vilified by opponents and mangled by the Russian bureaucracy.
Scholars such as Pallas and Linnaeus made his discoveries known to the world and took credit for his pioneering work.
Th is edition contains Steller’s diary of the voyage of discovery to Alaska, fragments from his work on marine mammals, passages from his Description of Kamchatka and Description of Bering Island, supplemented with passages from letters and from the
diaries he kept in Siberia.

PHILOSOPHY

Cees Buisman
HUMANITY IS NOT A PLAGUE – LIVING WITH TEN BILLION PEOPLE ON EARTH

In Humanity is Not a Plague, Cees Buisman argues that it is possible for 10 billion people to exist together on this Earth – as predicted for the year 2100 – provided that the richer part of the world no longer merely focuses on its own health, prosperity and happiness, and instead starts working seriously on developing a higher consciousness.
In this essay, Buisman sharply analyzes some of the problems facing mankind, such as freshwater shortages, whilst overturning several clichés and offering unexpected, positive solutions. Overpopulation is not the problem; the effects of our actions on the rest of the world have a much greater impact. ‘Back to nature’ is not the solution, nor is an overreliance on science and innovation. Large-scale technologies could even increase our problems. It seems that the growth of humanity will depend on the growth of our consciousness.
