Georg Wilhelm Steller hoort thuis in het rijtje natuurhistorische onderzoekers zoals Darwin, von Humboldt en Wallace. Hij was een Duitse geleerde in Russische dienst, die als eerste bioloog in 1741 Alaska bereikte tijdens de Tweede Kamtsjatka-expeditie onder leiding van Bering. Op de terugreis strandde de expeditie op een onbewoond eiland. Tijdens zijn onvrijwillige verblijf aldaar beschreef Steller de flora en fauna die hij op dit eiland aantrof, waaronder de reusachtige zeekoeien. Uiteindelijk bereikten de overlevende zeelieden Kamtsjatka. Voor Steller terug kon keren in Sint-Petersburg stierf hij in het winterse Siberië, belasterd door tegenstanders en gemangeld door de Russische bureaucratie. Geleerden als Pallas en Linnaeus maakten zijn ontdekkingen wereldkundig en streken de eer op voor zijn pionierswerk.
Deze uitgave bevat Stellers dagboek van de ontdekkingsreis naar Alaska, fragmenten uit zijn werk over zeezoogdieren, passages uit zijn Beschrijving van Kamtsjatka en Beschrijving van Beringeiland, aangevuld met passages uit brieven en uit de dagboeken die hij bijhield in Siberië.
