The Sonian Forest has been recognised as part of the Unesco World Heritage site ‘Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests’. An attractive title for a forest that has never been under agriculture and was already mentioned in charters dating back to the 12th century. For centuries it was a major source of wood and game. Despite land sales followed by large-scale deforestation in the 1830’s, this wooded area on the outskirts of Brussels sill covers more than 5,000 ha. 

This nature guide ‘Fauna and flora of the Sonian Forest’ invites you to discover the most beautiful peri-urban forest of Europe. For beginners it’s an ideal start to get to know species in their environment. For naturalists it’s a key to discovering lesser known groups of plants, fungi and animals. The guide contains 9 enticing dioramas of habitats and more than 700 lifelike illustrations of species by the famous nature illustrator Toni Llobet, enriched with expert text by field ecologist Hans Baeté under scientific supervision of Prof. Bart Muys (KU Leuven)
