Dit boek bevat een selectie van negentig cruciale brieven. De meeste zijn afkomstig uit de periode rond Kierkegaards verloving met Regine Olsen. De breuk met haar galmt na in Kierkegaards meesterwerk Of/of.
Kierkegaard toont zich in de brieven een groot stilist, iets wat in de vertaling van Diederik Grit en Edith Koenders goed naar voren komt. De inleiding is van de hand van hoogleraar Scandinavische Taal- en Letterkunde H.A. van der Liet.
Søren Kierkegaard was filosoof, protestants theoloog en cultuurcriticus. Hij wordt gezien als de eerste vertegenwoordiger van het existentialisme.
