The Sonian Forest has been recognised as part of the Unesco World Heritage site ‘Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests’. Theunis Piersma is hoogleraar trekvogelecologie in Groningen en waddenonderzoeker bij het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (NIOZ) op Texel. Hij is een internationale autoriteit op het gebied van (trek)vogels. In zijn vrije tijd doet hij in zijn woonplaats, het Friese Gaast, onderzoek naar huiszwaluwen.
