Drenthe Waterland
€ 30,00Voordat de mens in Drenthe kwam wonen, was er bijna alleen maar veen. Stond je aan de zuidrand, dan lag er voor je een onafzienbaar moerasgebied. Het was een immense, ontoegankelijke zone van zompige velden en grote waterpartijen. Ondenkbaar om hier doorheen te komen. Bescheiden berkenboompjes staken her en der uit het water omhoog en een aanzienlijk deel van de opslag werd al snel verstikt door het zuurstofarme veen. Deze omgevallen berkenboompjes toonden zich als witte stillevens op het moeras. Ondertussen wemelde het van de insecten, steekmuggen en andere zoemende wezens. Veenpluis en veenmos heersten hier, voor de mens was duidelijk geen plek. Wie in latere tijden met paard en wagen of te voet van het zuiden van Drenthe richting Groningen wilde, had tot ver in de huidige jaartelling een probleem. Er bestond maar één goede route: over de Hondsrug. Die verhoging in het landschap, eigenlijk bestaande uit meerdere stuwwallen, was dé manier om deze regio te doorkruisen en het levensgevaarlijke veenmoeras te omzeilen. Drenthe; dat bestond eigenlijk uit één grote ontoegankelijke waterbak. Deze regio was een spons van duizenden jaren verzameld water.
In ‘Drenthe Waterland’ laat fotografe Karin Broekhuijsen samen met schrijvers Reinout van den Born en Grieta Spannenburg zien dat ook in de huidige tijd het water een grote rol speelt in het Drentse landschap. Van het Leekstermeer tot de vele diepjes, de kanalen, zandpoelen en het veen. Water is een groot onderdeel van Drenthe, al wordt het daar niet vaak mee geassocieerd.
De prachtige foto’s van Karin worden ondersteund door de teksten van Reinout en Grieta waardoor ‘Drenthe Waterland’ meer is dan een fotoboek. Het laat de geschiedenis, heden en toekomst zien van het Drentse water.
