The Sonian Forest has been recognised as part of the Unesco World Heritage site ‘Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests’. Despite land sales followed by large-scale deforestation in the 1830’s, this wooded area on the outskirts of Brussels sill covers more than 5,000 ha.

De kanoet
€ 24,90De kanoet is een reislustige vogel. In Nederland overwintert de kanoet in de Waddenzee en de Delta of hij tankt daar bij, op weg van Siberië naar West-Afrika en terug.
Door die reislust is de kanoet ook een goede verhalenverteller. De kanoet is als de kanarie in de kolenmijn, en wijst ons in dit geval genadeloos op de aantasting van het milieu. De vogel blijkt zelfs een soort thermometer te zijn: door van generatie op generatie een beetje te krimpen, waardoor hij relatief een steeds langere snavel krijgt, laat de kanoet zien dat ook het klimaat langzaam aan het veranderen is.
Al deze verhalen zijn opgetekend uit de mond van mensen die deze vogel al vele jaren onderzoeken, met schitterende foto’s van een fotograaf die deze vogels ook al bijna zijn hele leven op de hielen zit.Rob Buiter (1966) is freelance wetenschapsjournalist.
