Hans Boelens (1717-1779), een Sneker vroedsman en handelaar, wijdde zijn leven aan zijn stad en haar minderbedeelden. Geboren in een tijd van economische bloei, bouwde hij een fortuin op als schipper en hoepmaker. Bij zijn dood liet hij, als kinderloze weduwnaar, zijn vermogen na aan de armen van Sneek, wat leidde tot de oprichting van het Hans Boelens Fonds.
Amateurhistoricus en stadsgids Gerben van Snits duikt in de geschiedenis van dit fonds, een weinig bekend eeuwenoud liefdadigheidsfonds dat diep verweven is met de stad Sneek en maar amper in de openbaarheid treedt.
