De geschiedenis van de Afrikaanse filosofie voert terug op de oude beschavingen van Egypte, Ethiopië en Nubië. Daar ontstond een rijke en veelzijdige filosofische denktraditie, die in het Westen lang is veronachtzaamd maar veel te bieden heeft. De filosofen Pius Mosima (Kameroen) en Henk Haenen (Nederland) beschrijven de Afrikaanse denkwijzen en laten zien waarom juist het Westen daarvoor de ogen moet openen. Het boek bespreekt niet alleen Afrikaanse redeneringen op het terrein van politiek, ethiek, kennisleer en metafysica, maar geeft ook inzicht in allerlei waardevolle Afrikaanse levenswijzen. Zo nodigt Afrikaans filosofie ons uit om anders te gaan denken over onder meer emancipatie, sociale cohesie, democratie, wijsheid, geestelijke gezondheid en levenskunst.
Pius Mosima studeerde filosofie en politieke wetenschappen in Kameroen en behaalde zijn PhD aan de Universiteit van Tilburg. Hij is professor aan meerdere universiteiten in Nederland en hij publiceert academische artikelen over Afrikaanse filosofie.
Henk Haenen studeerde geschiedenis en filosofie aan de Vrije Universiteit’ in Amsterdam en werkte ruim veertig jaar in het voortgezet onderwijs. Hij publiceerde een aantal boeken en artikelen waarin Afrikaanse filosofie vanuit verschillende invalshoek voor het voetlicht wordt gebracht.

Buisman is the Director of Wetsus – European Center for Sustainable Water Technology, and Professor at Wageningen University, in the Netherlands.
