Joris van der Paele is misschien wel de beroemdste kanunnik uit de (kunst)geschiedenis. In 1436 vereeuwigde Jan van Eyck hem op een meesterlijk schilderij. Hij leverde een staalkaart af van zijn genie.
Joris van der Paele was niet zo devoot als Jan van Eyck ons wil doen geloven. Als jongeman verliet hij zijn geboortestad Brugge om in dienst te treden van de paus. Niet uit roeping, wel uit ongebreidelde ambitie en honger naar succes. Hij was er ooggetuige van een van de grootste crisissen van de Kerk: het Westers Schisma, waarbij twee en later drie pausen streden om de Heilige Stoel.
Hij keerde schatrijk terug, eerst naar Utrecht en later naar Brugge, om er te rentenieren. Daar besloot hij zijn geld te besteden aan een schilderij en aan zielenmissen om hem tot in de eeuwigheid voort te laten leven.
Historicus Hendrik Callewier reconstrueerde de biografie van een kanunnik en een schilderij tegen de achtergrond van de laatmiddeleeuwse Nederlanden en de rest van Europa.
Hendrik Callewier (1981) is doctor in de Geschiedenis, staat aan het hoofd van de rijksarchieven in Brugge en Kortrijk en doceert aan de KU Leuven Kulak.
