Matthijs G.C. Schouten (1952) studeerde biologie, vergelijkende godsdienstwetenschappen, oosterse filosofie en Keltische taal- en letterkunde. Hij werkt bij Staatsbosbeheer en daarnaast is hij emeritus hoogleraar Plantenecologie en Natuurbeheer aan Wageningen University & Research. Ook is hij hoogleraar Natuur- en Landschapsbescherming aan University College Cork (Ierland).
