Bezoekers van Lowlands, het festival dat ook wel bekendstaat als A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise, realiseren zich waarschijnlijk niet dat al in 1967 en 1968 in Utrecht twee popfestivals plaatsvonden onder de naam Flight to Lowlands Paradise. Nog minder bekend is dat deze evenementen werden georganiseerd door de anarchisten van de Utrechtse provobeweging Volte. Zij stonden aan de wieg van Nederlands eerste nachtvullende internationale popfestival.
Aan de hand van meer dan veertig interviews, foto’s en andere tijdsdocumenten beschrijft Van Flight naar Lowlands het ontstaan van Nederlands eerste popfestivals. De kleurrijke oproerkraaiers die de Flights organiseerden, maakten deel uit van een internationale popscene. Zij schetsen een levendig beeld van hun toenmalige subcultuur en leggen uit hoe hun Flights zich ontwikkelden tot het huidige Lowlands.
Patrick Bakkenes publiceerde eerder Kantelaars van de Sixties, over de maatschappelijke en culturele erfenis van de jaren zestig. Daarnaast is hij (mede)auteur van een vuistdik boek over zijn stamboom en familiegeschiedenis, over de periode 1100-2005.

Cees Buisman studied water purification engineering, in addition to business administration, communication theory and applied integral psychology. Throughout his life he has worked on new environmental technologies, which are used in industry all over the world. His scientific work is highly cited. Buisman is the Director of Wetsus – European Center for Sustainable Water Technology, and Professor at Wageningen University, in the Netherlands.
