Ambiorix tegen Caesar

Over Ambiorix, koning der Eburonen, is weinig bekend, maar dat zijn naam niet vergeten is dankt hij aan zijn vijand Caesar, die hem vermeldt in zijn Commentarii de Bello Gallico. Caesars Gallische Oorlog duurt van 58 tot 51 v. Chr.
In 54 v. Chr. lokt Ambiorix anderhalf Romeins legioen in een hinderlaag, roeit het vrijwel uit en trekt op naar het kamp van Cicero. Caesar weet een nieuwe ramp te voorkomen en zint op wraak. Vijftigduizend goed getrainde en zwaarbewapende Romeinse soldaten laten in de jaren daarna een spoor van dood en vernieling achter. De Eburonen verdwijnen in de nevelen van de geschiedenis. Ambiorix vlucht de Rijn over. Van hem wordt nooit meer iets vernomen.
Robert Nouwen is historicus en publicist. Hij studeerde geschiedenis en archeologie aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. In dit boek trekt hij een haarscherpe grens tussen de harde en de mythe.

Philip Van Kerrebroeck is an urologist and professor emeritus of Urology at the University of Maastricht. Born in Leuven (Belgium), he trained in Surgery and Urology in Brussels, Utrecht, Nijmegen and San Francisco. Over the years, he has also developed an interest in the history of urology and cultural anthropology. He is currently chairman of the History Office of the European Association of Urology (EAU).
