De gemeente Achtkarspelen is rijk aan monumentale kerken met een grote schakering aan bouwkunst en inrichting. Markante objecten zijn bijvoorbeeeld de romaanse torenruimten in Buitenpost, de stenen torenspits in Surhuizum en de opschriftstenen in Surhuisterveen. De inrichting van de kerk in Buitenpost met een middeleeuws doopvont, zes herenbanken, tien rouwborden en uniek koperwerk behoort tot de mooiste in Friesland.
De vele fraaie foto’s in dit boek vertellen het verhaal van deze kerkenpracht. Regnerus Steensma publiceerde verschillende boeken en artikelen over kerkbouw en kerkinrichting en legt zich de laatste jaren in het bijzonder toe op het fotograferen van kerken. In 1970 was hij medeoprichter van de Stichting Alde Fryske Tsjerken.
