Cineast Niels Halbertsma maakte zijn eerste films in Zuid- en Midden-Amerika. Tijdens zijn werkzaamheden voor een oliemaatschappij in Colombia, eind jaren vijftig van de vorige eeuw, raakte hij gefascineerd door de oorspronkelijke bewoners van het land. Hun leefwijze stond op een kantelpunt; weliswaar voeren ze nog met boomstamkano’s over de rivieren, maar de eerste buitenboordmotoren hadden hun intrede gedaan, en naast blaaspijp en pijl en boog gebruikten ze inmiddels ook machetes, jachtgeweren en nylon visdraad. Halbertsma besloot ontslag te nemen bij de oliemaatschappij om documentairefilms te gaan maken. Met veertig kilo aan camera-apparatuur reisde hij per bus, zeilboot, watervliegtuig, muilezel en kano naar de afgelegen gebieden waar deze mensen woonden, om hun bestaan op film en foto vast te leggen. Dat leverde unieke beelden op van de Cuna op de San Blas-eilanden, de vissers van La Boquilla, de Emberá langs de Rio Esmeraldas, de Kogi in het hooggebergte van de Sierra Nevada en de Makuna in het Amazonewoud. In Piraparaná kijkt hij terug op deze bijzondere ontmoetingen.
