In de nacht van 10 en 11 april 1934 sluipen dieven de Sint-Baafskathedraal binnen
en lichten twee panelen van het Lam Godsretabel uit hun frame. Het paneel met de afbeelding van Johannes De Doper werd terugbezorgd, het paneel van de Rechtvaardige Rechters is meer dan negentig jaar later nog steeds niet terecht. Het is een van de meest iconische kunstdiefstallen ter wereld. Wie pleegde de diefstal en waarom? Niet Arsène Goedertier zoals altijd wordt aangenomen. Het onzalige plan rijpte in de geesten van mensen die door slechte beleggingen hun geld en dat van de kleine katholieke spaarders in rook zagen opgaan. Het losgeld moest dienen om de verliezen te dekken. Het pakte anders uit: de Staat kwam niet met geld over de brug, de handlanger Goedertier stierf aan een beroerte en het dossier werd afgesloten.

Philip Van Kerrebroeck is an urologist and professor emeritus of Urology at the University of Maastricht. Born in Leuven (Belgium), he trained in Surgery and Urology in Brussels, Utrecht, Nijmegen and San Francisco. Over the years, he has also developed an interest in the history of urology and cultural anthropology. He is currently chairman of the History Office of the European Association of Urology (EAU).
