De ruimtelijke ordening in Nederland is failliet.
Het is niet zo verwonderlijk dat de strijd om de ruimte vandaag de dag hoog oplaait. Ons land staat op de vierde plaats op de lijst van de dichtstbevolkte landen ter wereld. Voor de vele claims op de ruimte – van wonen, werken, infrastructuur, recreatie en sport tot natuur en landschap – is ons land feitelijk te klein. Om de strijd om de ruimte tot een goed einde te brengen is het nodig om onze eens zo sterke ruimtelijke ordeningstraditie nieuw leven in te blazen.
Jozef Keulartz behandelt in Strijd om de ruimte klassieke thema’s uit deze traditie, die nog steeds relevant zijn voor het huidige ruimtelijke ordeningsbeleid: de relatie tussen stad en platteland; de betekenis van de ‘geest van de plaats’ in de stedenbouw en de landschapsinrichting; de houding ten opzichte van ons industriële erfgoed; de mate van toegankelijkheid van de openbare ruimte; en de vraag hoe de actieve betrokkenheid van burgers bij hun leefruimte gestimuleerd kan worden.
Jozef Keulartz (1947) is emeritus hoogleraar milieufilosofie. Hij publiceerde veel over Science & Technology Studies, sociale en politieke filosofie, dierethiek, milieufilosofie en natuurbeleid. Eerder schreef hij onder andere Dieren in ons midden en Boommensen.
