Het Friese landschap is een boeiend geheel van gevarieerde gebieden. Het merengebied, de kleistreken van Westergo en Oostergo, de woudstreken, het Waddengebied of Gaasterlân, steeds zijn er veel bijzondere plekken als je erdoorheen rijdt, fietst, vaart of loopt.
Dat landschap is in de afgelopen eeuwen sterk veranderd. Er is veel verdwenen en begrippen die erbij hoorden zijn vergeten. In dit boek is veel van deze vaak vergeten Friese landschapstaal bewaard. Het vertelt over het gebruik en de beleving van het landschap zoals de mensen het vooral in de negentiende en vroeg twintigste eeuw zagen en voelden. Een Friese landschapsbiografie zoals die is vastgelegd in taal.
Karel F. Gildemacher (1946) verzamelde vele jaren uit tal van bronnen woorden, begrippen en namen die iets vertellen over het landschap en de geschiedenis van de mensen in de verschillende streken. Het werd een biografie van het Friese landschap in taal. Eerder (1993) promoveerde hij op historische waternamen en publiceerde onder andere over schipperstaal (2003), Friese plaatsnamen (2007), terpen en terpnamen (2008). In 2015 verscheen Het Friese water, een standaardwerk over de plek en de functie van al dat water in de provincie.
