In het voorjaar kleuren de bermen en weilanden geel van de paardenbloemen. Deze cultuurvolger is niet alleen een van de meest algemene soorten van onze flora, maar ook een hele bijzondere. De paardenbloem roept emoties op (weg met dat onkruid!), wordt gegeten, geschilderd en er is veel discussie over taxonomie en ecologie. De ene ecoloog beschrijft de paardenbloem als één soort met veel verschijningsvormen, andere specialisten herkennen in heel Nederland tot meer dan duizend soorten!
Om tot een goede herkenning te komen, onderscheidt de auteur tien verschillende secties, waarbij de sectie Taraxacum (weidepaardenbloem) de meest algemene is en de sectie Palustria (moeraspaardenbloem) de meest bedreigde. Karst Meijer heeft overzichtelijke nieuwe determinatiesleutels gemaakt. Aan de hand van deze sleutels en vele foto’s van Erik van den Ham kan iedere natuurliefhebber de grote soortenrijkdom moeiteloos op naam brengen. Karst Meijer is botanicus (gespecialiseerd in paardenbloemen en bramen), plantenjager en tuinontwerper. Hij beheert het Herbarium Frisicum, het grootste particuliere herbarium van Nederland.
Erik van den Ham is botanicus, fotograaf en kweker van bomen en planten. Hij zit in het bestuur van Stichting Herbarium Frisicum.
