‘Verzinnen doen wij niets,’ schreef Eli Heimans begin vorige eeuw in een van zijn natuurcolumns in De Groene Amsterdammer. In diezelfde tijd trok Jac.P. Thijsse de aandacht met zijn stukjes in het Algemeen Handelsblad en andere bladen. Heimans en Thijsse maakten het genre natuurcolumns populair.
In Verzinnen doen wij niets belicht Marga Coesèl de natuurcolumns van 100 jaar geleden tot nu, van Geertruida Carelsen tot Koos van Zomeren en Jean-Pierre Geelen. Aan de hand van goedgekozen citaten laat zij zien hoe columnisten elk op hun eigen wijze invulling gaven aan het genre en hoe dit in de loop der jaren veranderde.
Marga Coesèl (1942) is ‘la grande dame’ van de geschiedschrijving van de natuurbescherming in Nederland en de wereld van Heimans en Thijsse. Met verschillende titels haalde ze de shortlist van de Jan Wolkers Prijs.
