Knooppunt Waddenzee
€ 17,90Miljoenen wad- en watervogels trekken ieder jaar heen en weer tussen hun broedgebieden in Groenland, Scandinavië, West-Europa of Siberië, en hun wintergronden in Europa en Afrika. Als je alle routes van die trekvogels op de wereldbol tekent, zie je halverwege die kaart een druk knooppunt: de Waddenzee!
In het project Metawad hebben onderzoekers van het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee en de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen vijf compleet verschillende trekvogels van de Waddenzee onderzocht: de kanoet, de drieteenstrandloper, de rosse grutto, de rotgans en de lepelaar. Ze bekeken de vogels niet als ‘bewoners’ van die Waddenzee, maar als gebruikers van een veel groter systeem waar het wad een belangrijk onderdeel van is: het ‘metawad’.
Knooppunt Waddenzee biedt een kleurrijk pallet van portretten van de wetenschappers, die ploeterend met palen en hekwerk achterop hun ets over de kwelder trekken, of uren achtereen in weer en wind – of juist bakkend onder de Afrikaanse zon – naar vogels met kleurringen aan hun pootjes staan te zoeken. Het biedt ook portretten van de vijf onderzochte vogelsoorten. Wat weten we van deze dieren? En vooral: hoe kunnen overheden of natuurbeheerders hun voordeel doen met deze wetenschap?
