Het jonge meisje Yu woont met haar gezin in een krot op Curaçao, waarvan het dak lekt als het regent. Als ze van de ene op de andere dag haar moedertaal Papiamentu niet meer mag spreken, weigert ze. Vreselijk vindt ze het. Het liefst zingt ze de hele dag en droomt ze weg bij de heerlijke geuren van zoete koekjes of stoofpot die het raam door waaien. Als haar vader vertrekt naar Nederland, moet ook zij mee naar het beruchte Hulanda zonder gebakken bananen, felle middagzon en dansende rokken.
Verboden taal is een verhaal over het lot van veel Antilliaanse kinderen die ongevraagd en onvoorbereid naar Nederland moeten verhuizen. Door de ogen van Yu beschrijft het de schok van het kolonialiseren van een taal en veranderen van een cultuur, en de daarbij horende mentaliteit.

Throughout his life he has worked on new environmental technologies, which are used in industry all over the world. His scientific work is highly cited. Buisman is the Director of Wetsus – European Center for Sustainable Water Technology, and Professor at Wageningen University, in the Netherlands.
