Hermann Johannes Conring
€ 24,90De Oostfriese Hermann Johannes Conring was een Duitse jurist die in de jaren 1940-1945 als gedelegeerde van de Duitse bezettingsmacht fungeerde. Hij werd ervan beschuldigd in de hoedanigheid van Beauftragte van Seyss-Inquart meegewerkt te hebben aan het plan om de Nederlandse staat op te heffen. Ook werd Conring ervan beschuldigd de Joden in de provincie Groningen te hebben vervolgd en standrechtelijke executies te hebben laten uitvoeren bij de april-meistaking in 1943. Conring was in de jaren voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog Landrat in de Oostfriese Landkreis Leer. In de naoorlogse jaren zette Conring zich als CDU-Bundestag-Abgeordnete in voor landbouw, kunstbeveiliging en dewaterhuishouding in Oost-Friesland.
Alie Noorlag studeerde Communicatiewetenschappen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Zij is verbonden aan de Gedenkstätte Esterwegen, die aan de vijftien Emslandkampen en hun slachtoffers herinnert.
De leugens en de schaterlach
€ 17,90Toen de Russische componist Dmitri Sjostakovitsj in 1975 overleed, werd hij wereldwijd gezien als een trouwe, zij het wat weerbarstige vazal van het Sovjetregime. Maar klopte dat wel? Was hij niet eerder een geheime dissident? Een enorme controverse kwam op gang. Dit essay reconstrueert de pittigste debatten uit die Sjostakovitsj-strijd: een spetterend gevecht van leugens en (halve) waarheden, dat de muziekwetenschap meer kwaad dan goed heeft gedaan. Daarna komt de componist zelf aan het woord. Tussen alle meesterwerken door schreef hij namelijk ook een snoeiharde Stalin-satire: de Antiformalistische Rajok of De Peepshow. Vol humor rekent hij daarin genadeloos af met de cultuurpolitiek van de sovjets.
Victor Horta and the Frison House in Brussels

commissioned by Maurice Frison, a lawyer and friend of the architect, and was built in 1894-1895. Horta designed not only the house, but also all its furniture and decoration, right down to the smallest detail: from door handles to marble fireplaces, from mosaic floors to elegant banisters, from wall lamps to the gratings for the cellar openings. The absolute eyecatcher is the winter garden, whose elegant design allows soft yellow light to flow subtly into its perfectly proportioned space.Nupur Tron is the author of this book and owner of the house. In recent years, she has breathed new life back into Horta’s masterpiece. She pieced together bits of the old chandeliers she found in one of the cellars. She had items of furniture designed by Horta lovingly restored. With great passion, she continues to search for the funds that will allow her to restore the entire house to its former glory, one step at a time.
