Philip Van Kerrebroeck is an urologist and professor emeritus of Urology at the University of Maastricht. Born in Leuven (Belgium), he trained in Surgery and Urology in Brussels, Utrecht, Nijmegen and San Francisco. Over the years, he has also developed an interest in the history of urology and cultural anthropology. He is currently chairman of the History Office of the European Association of Urology (EAU).
De ziel van zwart Amerika
€ 24,90Er zijn maar weinig boeken die geschiedenis schrijven. Dit is zo’n boek. The Souls of Black Folk, hier vertaald als De ziel van zwart Amerika, staat aan de basis van de zwarte vrijheidsstrijd in de twintigste eeuw. De literaire begaafde W.E.B. Du Bois beschrijft hoe raciale vooroordelen doorwerken in het alledaagse leven van zwarte mensen. Anders dan witte mensen, worden zij gedwongen tot een ‘dubbel bewustzijn’, waarbij ze zichzelf ook steeds door de ogen van de witte mens zien.
Met dit boek gaf Du Bois de aanzet tot een hernieuwd zwart zelfbewustzijn. Zo voedde hij de latere strijd voor toegang tot het hoger onderwijs. Inmiddels geldt het boek, waarin het ideaal van het panafrikanisme centraal staat, als een mijlpaal in de Afro-Amerikaanse literatuur.
De inleiding is van de hand van Stephan Sanders. Babah Tarawally laat in het nawoord zien dat Du Bois’ meesterwerk weinig aan actualiteit heeft ingeboet.
William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868–1963) promoveerde in de filosofie. Als vooraanstaand Amerikaanse mensenrechtenactivist richtte hij de National Association for the Advancement of Colored People op. Dit is, opmerkelijk genoeg, de eerste vertaling van zijn meesterwerk.
Klaas Koopmans 1920-2006
€ 29,90In 2020 is het een eeuw geleden dat de Friese kunstschilder Klaas Koopmans werd geboren. Koopmans was een autodidact, leefde in eerste instantie van zijn werk als huisschilder, maar groeide daarna uit tot een van de belangrijkste kunstschilders van de twintigste eeuw in Fryslân.
Dit boek schetst de ontwikkeling van zijn kunstenaarschap. Vier auteurs gaan vanuit verschillende invalshoeken in op Koopmans’ plaats binnen de Friese cultuur, zijn verhouding tot het Friese expressionisme en hoe zijn werk met een psychiatrische achtergrond valt te kwalificeren. Afsluitend is er speciale aandacht voor de brieven van Koopmans in de periodes dat hij opgenomen was in psychiatrische inrichtingen.
Dit boek toont met zijn vele illustraties de kracht van Koopmans’ werk.
