Philip Van Kerrebroeck is an urologist and professor emeritus of Urology at the University of Maastricht. Born in Leuven (Belgium), he trained in Surgery and Urology in Brussels, Utrecht, Nijmegen and San Francisco. Over the years, he has also developed an interest in the history of urology and cultural anthropology. He is currently chairman of the History Office of the European Association of Urology (EAU).

€ 16,90In Doopsgezinden in Friesland schetst historicus Cor Trompetter het ontstaan van de doopsgezinde beweging in Friesland, met als centrale guur de ex-katholiek geestelijke Menno Simons. Hoe kon een minderheid als de doopsgezinden in de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw toch zo’n belangrijk stempel drukken op ons geestelijk erfgoed? Doopsgezinden stonden in politieke zin aan de kant, werden vervolgd en toch speelden ze een buitengewone rol op economisch en cultureel gebied.
Verdrinking, onthoofding, ophanging en verbranding viel een doopsgezinde ten deel vanwege afwijkende standpunten en leer. Ook Menno Simons kwam al snel bij de vervolgers in het vizier en vluchtte daarom weg uit Friesland. Simons is nooit de onbetwiste leider van de doperse beweging geweest. Voortdurend was er strijd binnen die beweging. Verharding van standpunten en daarop volgende scheuringen waren het resultaat. Aan het einde van Menno’s leven waren de conicten zo hevig geworden, dat de doopsgezinde beweging in de Nederlanden feitelijk in verschillende groepen uiteen was gevallen. Ook in Friesland, bij botsingen tussen de ‘harde Friezen’ en de ‘nog hardere Friezen’. De onderlinge verdeeldheid onder doopsgezinden was niet zelden een veel groter gevaar dan welke tegenstander van buiten dan ook. Trompetter schetst een politiek-sociale ontwikkeling van deze stroming in de latere eeuwen.
